Recycling used tires into functional objects requires a minimum of technical preparation. Before any transformation, we recommend cleaning the tire with a high-pressure cleaner, sanding it with 80-grit sandpaper to enhance the adhesion of coatings, and systematically drilling the bottom if the object will remain outdoors. This last point limits water stagnation, which is a source of mosquito proliferation. The twenty projects that follow cover creations for the home and garden, categorized by type of transformation.

1. Rope-bound coffee table

DIY coffee table made from a tire wrapped in sisal rope with a glass top

The principle is to wrap sisal or hemp rope around a tire laid flat, securing each coil with a hot glue gun. A plywood disc screwed onto the top serves as a rigid tabletop.

The result is a sturdy piece of furniture, capable of supporting a significant load thanks to the annular structure of the tire. To extend its lifespan, we apply two coats of marine varnish on the rope, which prevents fraying and makes cleaning easier. Four furniture casters attached under a second plywood disc make the table mobile.

Among the many DIY ideas with tires, this coffee table remains the most replicable without specialized tools.

2. Upholstered indoor pouf

Upholstered indoor pouf made from a tire covered in teal fabric

Two MDF discs close the tire at the top and bottom. The interior is filled with high-density foam or compacted fabric scraps. The outer covering, an upholstery fabric stapled under the bottom disc, gives a neat finish.

The tire absorbs deformation and retains its shape even after several years of use. This is a clear advantage over a classic expanded polystyrene pouf, which collapses quickly.

3. Painted raised planter

Raised planter made with two stacked tires painted terracotta and mustard yellow filled with flowers

Stack two or three tires, secure them together with self-tapping screws, drill the bottom of the lower tire, and then fill with potting soil. Exterior acrylic paint adheres well to the sanded rubber.

The height achieved limits back pain in the vegetable garden. Drilling the bottom remains the most overlooked health precaution in tutorials, while a tire laid flat retains rainwater and encourages mosquito breeding.

4. Horizontal hanging swing

Horizontal hanging swing made from a tire hung from a tree with a child sitting inside

A tire suspended horizontally by three or four galvanized chains fixed to through bolts provides a stable seat for children. Each anchor point must pass through the tread with a wide washer on both sides.

We recommend drilling three drainage holes in the bottom of the tire to prevent any accumulation of stagnant water after rain.

5. Sealable sandbox

Sealable sandbox made with painted tires assembled and filled with clean sand in a garden

A tractor or agricultural tire offers a sufficient diameter to serve as a sandbox. The upper sidewall, cut with a jigsaw, leaves a comfortable rounded edge for sitting.

A treated plywood disc or a tarp stretched over a frame serves as a lid. This system protects the sand from animal droppings and moisture between uses.

6. Dog or cat bed

Dog bed made from a flat tire filled with a sheepskin cushion with a dog sleeping inside

A standard passenger tire, cleaned and painted, accommodates a round cushion cut to the interior dimensions. The rigidity of the rubber prevents the animal from deforming or flipping its bedding.

For small breeds, a scooter or motorcycle tire is sufficient. Adding four wooden legs elevates the bed and insulates the animal from the cold ground.

7. Vertical column vegetable garden

Vertical column vegetable garden made of stacked tires planted with strawberries, lettuce, and herbs

Four to six tires stacked and slightly offset create lateral planting pockets. Each tire is filled with potting soil, and strawberry or herb plants emerge through the gaps.

This technique utilizes vertical space on less than one square meter of ground. It is particularly suitable for balconies and small urban gardens.

8. Buried flowerbed border

Garden flowerbed border created with buried tire sections cut into sawtooth shapes and painted

Tires cut in half widthwise and then driven vertically into the ground form a soft and durable border. The rubber does not rot when in contact with moist soil, unlike untreated wood.

Painting the visible portions allows for harmonizing the border with the rest of the garden. The regular spacing between each half-tire creates a simple graphic pattern.

9. Stabilized slope stairs

Stabilized slope stairs made with buried tires filled with gravel and topped with stone slabs

On a sloped terrain, tires filled with compacted earth and gravel serve as non-slip steps. The natural anchoring of the rubber in the ground prevents slipping, even in rainy weather.

Each tire is sunk one-third into the slope and secured with metal stakes. Vegetation eventually partially covers the sides, integrating the steps into the landscape.

10. Outdoor hanging light fixture

Outdoor hanging light fixture made from a black painted tire with an Edison bulb inside

A tire cut into regular strips with a jigsaw, then turned inside out, takes on a sphere or chalice shape. A waterproof E27 socket fixed in the center transforms the structure into a pendant light.

The result resembles industrial light fixtures. We recommend a low-energy LED bulb to limit heating when in contact with the rubber.

11. Round wall shelf

Round wall shelf made from a tire cut in half painted sage green with plants and decorative objects

A motorcycle or scooter tire, fixed to the wall with two sturdy brackets, serves as a circular shelf. The inner cavity holds books, plants, or decorative objects.

The tire can be painted or covered with rope to blend into an interior. The mounting must support the weight of the contents, hence the need for appropriate anchors for the type of wall.

12. Rubber-framed mirror

A bicycle or motorcycle tire, cleaned and optionally painted matte black, frames a round mirror cut to the right size. The mirror is glued onto an MDF backing, which is itself attached to the back of the tire.

The rubber frame adds a raw and graphic touch suitable for industrial interiors or bathrooms.

13. Stackable garden composter

Stackable garden composter made with stacked tires painted green with ventilation holes

Three stacked tires without a bottom form an aerated composter. The absence of a rigid wall makes turning the compost easy by simply lifting the tires one by one.

The rubber retains heat better than wood, which accelerates the decomposition of organic matter, especially in cold periods. The upper sidewall of the last tire can be covered with a board or lid.

14. Bar stool with metal base

DIY bar stool made from a cushioned tire covered in cognac leather mounted on a black metal base

A passenger tire, padded and covered with leather or faux leather, forms the seat. A welded steel tube base or a central leg salvaged from a broken stool provides the height.

This project requires a welding machine or repurposed plumbing fittings as a structure. The result is a solid seat with a strong character.

15. Upside-down strawberry planter

Strawberry planter made from an upside-down tire painted red with flowering strawberries

A tire with one sidewall cut in a zigzag and then turned inside out takes the shape of a cup on a pedestal. This classic tire recycling technique requires strength but no expensive tools.

Once painted, the upside-down planter resembles a stone vase. It is suitable for strawberries, petunias, and trailing plants.

16. Children’s climbing wall

Climbing wall for children built with tires fixed to a wooden structure with colorful holds

Passenger tires fixed to a fence or wall with through bolts create climbing holds. Children slide their feet and hands into the cavities to climb.

We recommend a shock-absorbing surface underneath (wood chips, sand) and a reasonable maximum height. Each tire should be secured at least in three points to support the weight of a moving child.

17. Tiered garden fountain

Tiered garden fountain made with three stacked tires painted stone gray with cascading water

Three tires of decreasing diameters, stacked and sealed with an EPDM tarp, form the basins. A small submersible pump circulates water from the lower basin to the top.

Waterproofing is the critical point: the tarp must rise over the inner sides of each tire and be held in place by the weight of the upper tire. A filling test without a pump allows checking for leaks before commissioning.

18. Entrance umbrella stand

Entrance umbrella stand made from a tire painted matte white with a gold insert on hex tile

A passenger tire placed vertically, supported by a wooden base, serves as an umbrella stand. The inner cavity holds the handles, and rainwater drains into the rim if a catch basin is placed underneath.

This project takes less than an hour. A spray paint job and the tire fits into any entrance.

19. Decorative rainwater collector

Decorative rainwater collector made from a tractor tire painted navy blue with a brass tap

Several tires stacked around a plastic barrel camouflage a raw water collector. The draw-off tap emerges between two tires through an appropriate drilling.

The rubber protects the barrel from UV rays and extends its lifespan. Painting the tires the same color as the facade makes the whole discreet.

20. Ground obstacle course

Ground obstacle course with brightly colored tires arranged on a lawn for children

Tires laid flat in a staggered pattern in the garden form a motor skills course. Children jump from tire to tire, working on balance and coordination.

The tires can be painted different colors to add game instructions. Securing each tire to the ground with a central stake prevents movement during jumps.

Before starting a project, keep in mind that burning and abandoning tires is prohibited in France. Any tire without a second life must be entrusted to a professional or dropped off at an approved collection center.

Since 2024, distributors with sufficient dedicated space accept tires from individuals without a purchase obligation, up to eight units per year. Another reason to transform those lying around in the garage rather than letting them pile up.
